CHEMXIN Inert Alumina Ceramic Balls – Protecting Your Catalyst Bed

Jul 30, 2026

1. Product Overview
CHEMXIN Inert Alumina Ceramic Balls are an essential bed support medium in fixed-bed reactors. Although they do not directly participate in chemical reactions, they play an irreplaceable role in protecting catalysts, equalizing fluid distribution, and extending plant operating cycles. They are widely used in hydrotreating, catalytic reforming, isomerization, demethylation, and other petrochemical processes.
The product is typically loaded at both the top and bottom of the catalyst bed in fixed-bed reactors. It serves not only as a support layer to prevent catalyst particle loss, but also as a buffer layer to optimize flow distribution, ensuring efficient and stable plant operation.

2. Three Core Functions
2.1 Catalyst Protection – Extending Service Life
When feed gas and liquid enter the reactor from the top, they carry considerable kinetic energy. Without a top inert ceramic ball layer to absorb the impact, the high-velocity stream would directly impinge on the catalyst bed, causing surface abrasion, crushing, or even breakage of extruded catalyst particles.
The top ceramic ball layer effectively dissipates the kinetic energy over a wider area, allowing the fluid to decelerate gradually before contacting the catalyst. Similarly, the bottom layer prevents catalyst fines from migrating downstream with the process stream, avoiding downstream pipeline blockage and fouling.
2.2 Flow Optimization – Improving Reaction Efficiency
Uneven fluid distribution is a primary cause of reduced reactor performance. When the feed stream channels or takes "shortcuts," much of the catalyst remains underutilized, while localized overloaded zones deactivate rapidly.
CHEMXIN Inert alumina ceramic balls create a multitude of additional distribution points within the bed. As the gas-liquid stream passes through the gaps between the balls, it undergoes repeated splitting, mixing, and redistribution, ensuring that every cross-section of the catalyst bed receives a uniform flow. This uniform wetting and gas-liquid contact maximizes catalyst utilization, directly enhancing conversion rates and selectivity of target products.
2.3 Impurity Filtration – Preventing Bed Contamination
Feedstock inevitably contains various solid particulates. If these impurities reach the catalyst, they deposit on active sites, block pore entrances, and accelerate catalyst deactivation through poisoning, coking, and other mechanisms.
High-quality alumina ceramic balls feature a porous microstructure that effectively traps such solid impurities via a depth filtration mechanism, capturing particulates within surface pores and inter-particle voids, thereby protecting the catalyst bed from contamination.
3. Practical Application Cases
Case 1: Continuous Catalytic Reforming Unit Retrofit
A customer's continuous catalytic reforming unit had long suffered from catalyst migration and uneven bed temperature distribution. We recommended replacing the existing support media with 99% high-alumina ceramic balls in 6mm and 13mm sizes. The unit operated under severe thermal cycling conditions with daily temperature differences exceeding 150°C, while also handling chlorine-containing corrosive media.
After 18 months of operation, the high-alumina ceramic balls remained intact with no significant weight loss or cracking observed. Bed stability improved significantly, and unit operation became noticeably smoother.
Case 2: Naphtha Treater at a Korean Refinery
We supplied 100 tons of inert alumina ceramic balls in 6mm and 13mm sizes to a cooperative customer for their catalyst bed support system. The customer reported smooth installation and immediate improvement in bed stability. Based on this successful experience, the customer recommended our products to a Korean refinery, which subsequently ordered 108 tons of the same series. The product achieved long-term stable operation under demanding conditions in the naphtha treater, earning high recognition from the end user.
